UTME: JAMB to commence 2019 registration in December

11/30/2018 11:47:00 PM
Abuja—The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, said yesterday it was set to commence registration for 2019/2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, in December as scheduled.

The Head of Media of the Board, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, announced this while addressing newsmen during the conduct of promotion exercise for the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, at the board’s Computer Based Test (CBT) Centre in Abuja.
According to him, no specific date has been fixed for the commencement of the registration yet.
He, however, said that plans were underway to do so as soon as possible as the board was initially waiting for the pronouncement of the Presidency on the reduction of the examinations fee, which was formally announced on Wednesday.
The Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday approved the downward review of the examination registration fees from N5,000 to N3,500 effective from January 2019.
The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, announced this after the meeting.
Benjamin said it was commendable what the President had done as he was someone, who had always had the interest of the masses at heart and would prove to ensure that no Nigerian was deprived of tertiary education.
“The president has overtime, expressed concern that the charges were high. Our consistent remittance has proven that something could actually be done and even if charges are reduced, examinations can still be conducted with no service suffering any issue of funding.”
“The president has taken this bold step, we will see what happens after this reduction and if need be for further reduction, Mr President will do so in no distant time because he has concerns for the ordinary Nigerian on the streets. “
Benjamin reiterated the board’s readiness to continuously give the general public the desired impact to further enhance institutions through conducting transparent and credible examinations at its CBT centres, nationwide.
He explained that organisations and agencies chose to conduct their exercises at JAMB because of the trust and confidence they had for the board to deliver.
“Before each examinations, we charge the candidates to conduct themselves in the best way because once you breach the examination’s code of conduct, you will be immediately sent out of the hall.”
“ We are very firm, determined and irrespective of whoever is involved, our benchmark is that you must behave accordingly as expected of you,” he said.

ITF graduates 48 trainees in Kano

11/30/2018 06:24:00 AM

By Richard P. Ngbokai | Published
Date Nov 30, 2018
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF), in collaboration with the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), has injected 48 fresh graduates into the economy after twelve months training.
The graduands, most of whom are university graduates, were trained in various skills across the Nigerian industrial value chain with a view to mitigating the level of idleness among youth.
Addressing the graduands during the graduation ceremony at the Industrial Skill Training Centre in Kano, the Director General of the fund, Sir Joseph N. Ari emphasized the need for Nigerian youths to look beyond university degrees and seek additional skills after their studies for self sustenance and job creation.
He described skill set as “currency of 21st century” adding that many graduates were unemployed because of lack of entrepreneurial skills.
“Most of the people that keep life going are those with skills. We have many graduates that studied lucrative courses both in sciences and humanities, but as good as these courses are, opportunities are not there for them in the labour market as such a lot of them are unemployed; but there is no way you can have a skill and be redundant,” he argued.
Represented by the Director Research and Curriculum Development, Mr Zacharia John Piwuna, the ITF boss disclosed that since inception of the programme about 10 years ago, over 100, 000 youths from the 36 states of the federation had been trained in different trades.
He said over 80 percent of ITF graduates were employed in both public and private sectors, contributing to the economic development of the country.
The director general appealed to government to expand the scope of its investment in human capital development by establishing more technical and skill acquisition centres across the country.
The District Head of Gwale, who was also the chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Yahaya Abdullahi Abbas commended the facilitating agencies for investing in manpower development describing it as a right step towards addressing the menace of social vices in the state.
He urged the graduands to utilize their skills judiciously for their personal development and the country at large.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the facilitators and promised to be good ambassadors of the scheme.

AlJazeera: 'Nigeria's Worsening Job Crisis Feels Like There's No Hope'

11/30/2018 02:03:00 AM
by MeanChris
Four out of every 10 people in the country's workforce are either unemployed or underemployed.
There has been one single promise that has dominated the election manifestos of Nigeria's presidential candidates as they seek to lure the support of the country's voters ahead of polls in February: jobs, jobs and more jobs.
This has also been the one issue that has consumed Immaculate Uba, who lost her bank job two years ago.
"It has been a horrible experience I never expected in my life - knowing fully well that you are willing and able to work but can't secure a job," she told Al Jazeera in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.
"I am still searching for a paid job," she says. In the meantime, she adds, she's trying to make a living by doing bead- and shoe-making work.
Shrinking opportunities
Four out of every 10 people in the country's workforce are either unemployed or underemployed.
The unemployment rate stood at 18.8 percent in the third quarter of 2017, with underemployment at 21.2 percent.
The National Bureau of Statistics has not released new jobs data since last year, prompting accusations by critics that this is due to political reasons.
Meanwhile, a number of companies have exited Nigeria in recent months - the latest being global banking giants HSBC and UBS.
South African casino and hotel operator, Sun International, is also close to shutting operations after its earnings were "hurt by subdued growth and one-off costs", the company said.
Analysts have blamed the exits on shaky investor confidence, dealing a big blow to foreign direct investment and jobs in Africa's most populous nation.
"Nigeria's unemployment level is beyond crisis levels, and ought to be the government's top concern as it has social implications," Cheta Nwanze, head of research at Lagos-based SBM Intelligence, told Al Jazeera, describing the joblessness figures as "unsustainable".
Amid this environment, thousands of young Nigerians are seeing the prospects of landing their dream job fade.
"I had hopes of a very bright career after graduating from university," says Agnes Uzoigwe attention, a 28-year-old who took her geology degree six years ago.
"I looked forward to a job with an oil company in the Niger Delta area but after almost four years of applying for different roles, I got frustrated," she adds, fighting back tears.
"The most annoying thing is that it looks like there's no hope. Those employed by companies are being sacked and people like me with no job experience can't even imagine getting any job," she adds.
Uzoigwe's father, who funded her studies, recently retired as a government employee and is relying on his pension to cater for his family of seven.
After a long period of searching for a job in Abuja, Uzoigwe has now taken up a job as a teacher in a private college. But she says her wage is barely enough to take care of her basic needs.
'Frustrated people will eventually turn to demagogues'
Nigeria is Africa's biggest economy, yet this that has not translated to jobs for many.
Frustrated and desperate, many job seekers have often fallen victim to fake hiring firms which cash in on their need to get a job.
These companies advertise positions with attractive offers, but end up swindling job seekers who are asked to pay "registration and logistics" fees before landing a job.
"With the school system adding roughly a million people a year to the workforce, and a very high birth rate, this represents Nigeria's biggest challenge," Nwanze, the analyst, says.
"Frustrated people will eventually turn to demagogues for their daily bread," he adds.
Political arena
The country's worsening unemployment situation has negatively affected the government's image.
President Muhammadu Buhari won the 2015 elections on the back of a campaign vowing to fix the nation's economy, but has struggled to fix the worsening economic crisis.
Now, ahead of the February elections, he is promising to generate more employment.
"The next level of effort focuses on job creation across various sectors," Buhari said in his election campaign's policy document.
"From an enlargement of the N-Power programme [government loan scheme for young graduates] to investing in technology and creative sector jobs to agriculture and revolutionising access to credit for entrepreneurs and artisans, there is scope for over 15 million new jobs."
His main challenger for the presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has attacked the government's job creation record since Buhari assumed office four years.
"Close to 16 million people are unemployed, nine million more than in 2014," Abubakar said in his own campaign document.
Abubakar has promised to remedy this with "the creation of up to three million self- and wage-paying employment opportunities in the private sector annually".
Iniobong Paul, a hotelier who lost her job two years ago, told Al Jazeera she hopes that the political promises will be realised after the elections
"It's not been easy," she says, adding that she looks forward to working again.

N-Power, veritable technology platform to boost education – Osinbajo ON November 29, 2018

11/29/2018 12:21:00 AM
ON November 29, 2018
By Yinka Kolawole
The N-Power employment and training scheme of the federal government provides a technology platform to boost education, Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has stated.
Osinbajo
Experts Make Case For Children’s Security
Osinbajo stated this at the University of Ibadan where represented President Muhammadu Buhari as the Visitor to the institution, on the occasion of the University’s 2018 Convocation and 70th Foundation Day Ceremony.
In a statement by Laolu Akande, media aide to the vice president, Osinbajo said the scheme, being technology-driven, offers a technology platform to train teachers quickly and efficiently, aside from the traditional training institutes.
He stated: “N-Power, our employment and skills training programme, now employs 500,000 young men and women who were hired using a technology platform developed by young Nigerians.
“We have had the collaboration of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Oracle Academy, Microsoft, Cisco Academy and IBM. How do we train teachers quickly and efficiently, aside from traditional teacher training institutes which must be refitted to deal with new technology-driven pedagogy? We must use technology platforms to train. We have had a few eye openers in this regard when we launched our N-Power programme.
“We trained them and provided materials for continuous training using our open platform and each of them was provided with an electronic tablet which contains a lot of training and teaching materials for the large number who teach in schools in every local government in Nigeria.”
The vice president said that in the next few years, both teachers’ training and teaching will be largely driven by technology; with university education, especially scientific research, made easy by virtual reality and Artificial intelligence tools.
He further said: “The current gap in educational attainment in the country has made it clear that we had to change both the substance of education our children receive and the methods by which they are taught. The early stage investment in primary and secondary school education is key to becoming a knowledge-driven economy.
“Our policy is to develop and introduce STEAM education – Science Education, Engineering, Arts and Math – curriculum in primary and secondary schools. This curriculum covers training in Skills in cross disciplinary, critical and creative thinking, problem solving and digital technologies, coding, digital arts, design thinking, and robotics.”
Reiterating that education cannot be left to Government alone, Osinbajo stressed that none of the world’s leading Universities depend wholly or even substantially on government funding, adding that all have evolved innovative means of financing and investment, to meet their funding needs and become financially sustainable.

TO AVOID EMBARRASSMENT AND UNNECESSARY PRESSURE IN LIFE:

11/28/2018 01:47:00 PM
+Put your kids in schools you can afford because expensive schools doesn’t guarantee good results. Just ensure they attend a good affordable school.

+Rent apartments you can pay for conveniently. Don’t live in a house you struggle to pay yearly.

+A man whose wife is pregnant has good 9 months to prepare, so also the pregnant woman in question. They should even plan for the worse and only seek help when they can’t meet up.

+Some problems in our lives don’t just pop up, 12 months ago, we knew we would pay rents...So its not an emergency.

+Let’s plan our lives and live within our means. Save more and spend less.

+Some women buy food for their children every morning before going to school, do you know it’s cheaper to cook at home?

+Some buy every Asoebi and also buy shoe and bag to match.

+Some people who don’t earn much, but have DSTV at home, go for GOTV and upgrade when your income upgrades. It’s still the same CNN.

+Eat healthy meals and protect your family from mosquitoes to avoid going to the hospital always.

+Take advantage of food and fruits in season, its cheaper and you can be creative to create amazing meals.

+Don’t copy your neighbor’s style of cooking soup, she earns well and her husband is a ‘big man’

+Don’t follow trends, wear clean well-ironed clothes and keep your hair neat. You would still look good.

+Keep your circle small, keep only friends that have senses!

+Above all things, have the fear of God, have integrity, don’t be lazy and be prayerful.

+Planning is the key, if you fail to plan, you plan to FAIL

+God bless us all and provide all our needs.

Trader Moni: 30,000 petty traders to benefit in Jigawa – Osinbajo

11/27/2018 07:25:00 AM

Dutse – No fewer than 30,000 petty traders in Jigawa would benefit from the Federal Government’s Microcredit Loan Scheme, otherwise known as ‘Trader Moni.’
The Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, made the disclosure in Dutse on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy visit to Emir of Dutse, Dr Nuhu Sunusi.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
Osinbajo said the petty traders would be given either N5,000, or N15,000 or N20,000 to enhance their respective businesses.
‘‘We are here today in order to deepen our work with common man, because our major concern is how to improve the life of common man in Nigeria.
‘‘So, I want to assure you a minimum of 30,000 traders will benefit from this programme.
‘‘In the first instance, a trader will be given N10,000 loan, after settling that it will be increased to N15,000 and up to N20,000,’’ Osinbajo said.
In his remarks, the Emir thanked the Vice-President for the visit.
‘‘We thank you for coming to explain to us what the Federal Government is doing to assist the common man in Nigeria.
‘‘We’ve seen the difference already, particularly with regard to women empowerment and school feeding programme, ’’ the monarch said.
He, therefore, urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the money to enhance their businesses.

‘Reject N-Power, Trader-Moni for jobs in NNPC, CBN’

11/27/2018 07:11:00 AM
By Kehinde Olatunji

The Presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has urged Nigerians to reject the N-Power and Trader Moni of All Progressives Congress (APC) for jobs in better sectors in the country. Sowore lamented that while politicians reserve jobs in Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) among others for their children and relatives, they are going about distributing Trader-Moni to the masses.

“It is time for the masses to get jobs not through N-power but in NNPC and CBN,” he charged when he arrived the country from the U.S.

“These jobs should not be reserved for the children of politicians while Trader-Moni is reserved for your mothers and brothers.”

Sowore posited that the country would be a better place for all if its leaders had the interest of the people at heart, adding that it was time to hand over the baton of leadership to those with vision.

He noted, “It is time to take this country from those who have destroyed it. As we know, Nigerians are tired of the same old set of people who play politics of bitterness. As a revolutionary movement and a political party, we are determined to take this country from those who have destroyed Nigeria and give it back to people who are ready to make a success of the future of Nigeria. It is not by accident that people who are leading our movement are the young people of Nigeria, who have been left behind by the legacy political parties. Whether they are PDP or APC, we are putting an end to their reign come next year.”

According to him, the current crop of politicians has proven to be deficient in all spheres, hence the need for the change of governance, saying the country is in dire need of leaders who have understanding and practical approach to the many challenges it is facing.

“We cannot continue to vote people who continue to spend the country’s money on medical trips abroad because there are tired and ought to have retired, he stated. “They cannot continue to manage the affairs of the country for another four years. Some people are even saying we should wait for another four years, but I am sorry, we don’t have four more years to wait. In fact, we should have done this four years ago, and by now, be talking about second tenure. Since we didn’t do so last time, now is the time to retire Buhari back to Daura. Now is the time to retire Atiku, who is supposed to be a retired custom officer. It is time for him to go back to his village as well.”

He lamented that Buhari’s government could not meet the demands of N30, 000 minimum wage while they earn huge sums of money from tax-payers.

“You can imagine, the people who are saying they cannot pay the N30, 000 minimum wags are earning N14 million per annum. If you earn N30, 000 per month, you have needed to work for 35 years to earn N14 million. Their children are going to school abroad with our own money. It is time to demand our rights; enough is enough!”

Fears as scammers take over Trader Moni registration in Kano

11/27/2018 02:24:00 AM
By Ibrahim Musa Giginyu, Richard P. Ngbokai & Sadika Abdulkadir

Some young scammers in Kano metropolis have converted the ongoing TraderMoni registration exercise into a source of extorting money from potential beneficiaries of the scheme, Kano Chronicle can report.
The programme is a federal government initiative designed with a view to enlarging the citizen financial inclusion agenda for Nigerians who are petty traders regardless of their social class or political affiliation.
It was gathered that persons who were perceived to be conversant with the process are allegedly taking advantage of the poor public to extort money from them in the pretext of helping them access their share of the federal government money.
Some of the residents who spoke to our reporters expressed their worries about the authenticity of the exercise with some saying since commencement of the registration in the state, they have not seen anybody that has benefitted from the exercise.
They alleged that the exercise is being not regulated by any specific government agency in the state, hence the prospective beneficiaries are left with no option than to roam from one registration agent to another, who have turned the well-intended exercise into a money making venture at the detriment of the poor masses.
Kano Chronicle learnt that the self-acclaimed agents charge between N200 to N1500 as registration fees even before accessing the cash by the beneficiaries.
Ibrahim Sadiq, one of the victims, who spoke to our reporters said he registered three times in different places through different processes, adding that there was the one he registered using a form he bought at N200 and he had also registered through an agent that collected N500.
“Initially, the whole thing seems to be so real to me but I became skeptical when I was told that, one can apply as many times as possible. I have registered using a form I bought at N200, I also registered through an agent that collected N500 as a registration fee and I was introduced by a friend to register using some codes through my mobile phone. But up till this moment I have not received a penny and I have not seen single person that actually collected the money,” Sadiq said.
Another victim of the scam, Malama Sadiya Abubakar of Kawo quarters in Nassarwa local government, explained how she did her registration.
She said, “I heard about the scheme from a family member, that the federal government was sharing the sum of N10, 000 to the Nigerian youths through a code. I was told that one will send the code and it’s free with all networks across Nigeria. When you dial the code a popup menu will appear asking you of your details including full name, address before you finally input a four digit password to personalize the process.
“After a while, the coordinators will send you a message that the registration was successful. At first I tried it for about four times before it went through and sometimes when I’m almost get to the final stage they terminate the process saying there was an error.
“I’ve not really seen anyone who received the cash, but I’ve heard that they will first have to screen the people before they send the money and the money is sent to beneficiaries’ mobile phone in form of recharge card from where they would send it to their personal bank accounts.”
According to Isa Umar Olala, the story that government was sharing Abacha’s loot had gone viral and registration of possible beneficiaries had commenced in every ward with people paying some token to get registered.
Olala added that the authenticity of the whole process was not yet known.
Two million petty traders are targeted to benefit from the loan in all the states of the federation. It was gathered that Bank of Industry, which is deploying the new scheme to identify the beneficiaries after their registration, has engaged about 4, 000 enumerators for the exercise.

Atiku will Scrap N-Power Programme

11/27/2018 12:25:00 AM
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of PDP plans to scrap the current N-Power Programme of the All Progressive Congress (APC) if he won the 2019 Presidential Election.
According to Atiku Campaign Organisation, “Nigeria doesn’t need N-Power ” rather a more comprehensive approach to make them self-sufficient than depending on the government, the Economic Adviser to the Organisation, Mustapha Chike-Obi, said on Sunrise Daily, Nigeria’s 24/7 news TV, Channels Television on Monday.
N-Power programme is currently engaging 500, 000 graduates under the graduate unit of the job initiative programme, which provided them with tablet devices loaded with training materials to help them deliver at their places of primary assignment.
But the Atiku Campaign Organisation believed that the N-Power can provide a permanent solution to the problem of high rate of unemployment in Nigeria.
While speaking on how the Presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, plans to tackle unemployment, Chike-Obi said:
How Atiku presidency intends to achieve three million jobs per year if he won 2019 elections
Chike-Obi, who bagged a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from University of Lagos, was the pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, from 2010 – 2015.

AMCON was established for the purpose of efficiently resolving the non-performing loan assets of banks in Nigeria.
While some people believed he performed creditably well as the head of AMCON, which earned him several awards, he was sacked by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government in 2015 , accusing him of “politicisation of AMCON” among other offences.

“The reason why we say 3 millions jobs it’s because we have about 160 million people, and we are having roughly 4 million Nigerians added every year and expect 60% of them to go into the workforce.
You need to look for three million jobs roughly a year to keep the unemployment rate where it is right now not to make it more worst.
I’d have gone for five million jobs but they said we should keep it at three million, we’re saying a minimum of three millions jobs.
