The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) opens recruitment portal

4/16/2019 02:12:00 PM
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday officially announced plans to recruit 3,200 officers into the service.

The Acting Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Human Resources Department, Umar Sanusi made this known at a news conference in Abuja, NAN reports.

Sanusi explained that 800 would be recruited to fill vacancies in the Support Staff for Superintendent Cadre Category, and 2,400 would fill that of Customs Inspector and Customs Assistant Cadre in the General Duty Categories.

He said that the service’s portal for the recruitment would be opened 12 midnight of Tuesday and would be closed after three weeks.

According to him, a web portal to receive and process all applications has been created as a sub-domain of the NCS website; www.customs.gov.ng.

He said the portal “is a user-friendly one that prospective applicants from all parts of the country and even outside Nigeria can log in to submit applications and upload documents.

“The URL is vacancy.customs.gov.ng, the specific requirements established for the vacancies.

“Shortlisting of candidates will be done and such candidates short listed will be notified, invited for continuation of the recruitment process.

“Following the necessary approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC), NCS is now set to recruit officers and men to fill existing vacancies.

“Application for recruitment will be open to all eligible Nigerians, who meet the requirements irrespective of their tribe, religion, state, or any other consideration.

“In our bid to ensure equal and fair opportunity to all applicants, we are working every step of the recruitment process in compliance with the requirements of the Federal Character Commission.

“We are actively engaged with the commission to ensure that the process will earn a certificate of compliance on merit,” he said.

Sanusi said that customs would deploy help desk for applicants to handle complaints, and offer support service.

He said the help desk could be reached through the email address — helpdesk@customs.gov.ng, adding that a detailed Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) was also populated on the application portal for further clarification.

The Deputy Comptroller-General disclosed that more details of the recruitment would be advertised on seven national newspapers on Wednesday, April 17.

“We are determined to conduct an exercise that is credible, fair and transparent and we will deploy all machinery within our powers to ensure that the integrity of the exercise is not compromised.

“We will like to emphasise that participation in this exercise is free for all eligible applicants, any demand for or solicitation for any payments to process, facilitate, or influence the process under any guise is illegal and should be reported to customs’ office.

“We are aware that some criminal elements may want to take advantage of this recruitment to scam desperate job applicants.

“Some of them are reported to be operating illegal sites and portals, collecting various sums of money from applicants.

“I want to reiterate that the portal for this exercise can only be accessed through the official service web site, where no fees will be demanded,” he said.

We’re not absorbing pioneer N-Power volunteers into civil service- FG

4/10/2019 04:32:00 AM

The Federal Government has debunked rumours of absorbing pioneer volunteers of the N-power scheme into its civil service.

Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job creation and Youth Empowerment, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

‘’To the best of my knowledge, I am not aware of this news, when I read it, they were quoting Mr President and I am not aware of any meeting where Mr President made such statement.

‘’I am not aware of the practicality of such news, what I know was that the pioneer members will not exit the programme as earlier schedule,’’ he said.

Imoukhuede said that the pioneer members, who were to exit the programme in November 2018, would continue to earn their pay while they continue their work.

He said government was trying to ensure a greater enhancement for economic opportunities for the pioneer members of the scheme.

The Senior Special Assistant said the scheme was in talks with some state governors and other agencies on ways to absorb them into the civil service in their respective states.

He said the scheme was also speaking with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammed Bello, on absorbing the volunteers into its civil service.

Imoukhuede also noted that some of the volunteers had contributed immensely to the school where they were attached in the FCT and promised that they would not be abandoned.

“Some of these volunteers have gotten used to the teaching methodology, and they are used to the system, and you know some of these schools also lack teachers.

“In some of these schools, you only find the head teacher and the Vice, the other teachers you find are N-power and corps members,” he said.

The social media was on Tuesday filled with news that the Federal Government planned to absorb pioneer volunteers of the N-power scheme into its civil service. (NAN)

We've trained and equipped more than 11,000 youths on job skills - FG

4/04/2019 10:28:00 AM
The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, says the Federal Government will do all that is necessary to ensure that the capacities of Nigerian youth are developed and fully utilised.

Osinbajo said this in Abuja on Thursday at the closing ceremony of the National Industrial Skills Development Programme (NISDP) where more than 11,000 youth were equipped with start-up packs by Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

He was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha.

“This event is an outcome of the policy thrust of the present administration, which is anchored on revamping the economy, fighting corruption, reduction of poverty and the creation of jobs for the teeming unemployed Nigerians.

“Today, I can say without equivocation that close to four years of this administration, we have achieved most of these targets through the implementation of social investment programmes like N-Power and Trader Money.

“Also we achieved the full implementation of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which have had varied impact on all sectors of the National Economy,’’ he said.

Osinbajo said that the greatest challenge of the administration was harnessing the potential of the youthful population for them to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the National economy as entrepreneurs or as employees.

He noted that “United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has projected that by year 2050, Nigeria’s population will hit 500 million.

“When tied with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) estimates that over 26 million Nigerians are unemployed despite the numerous initiatives of the Federal Government, it became obvious that more needed to be done,’’ he said.

Osinbajo encouraged hitherto comatose parastatal agencies with mandates for skills acquisition to train Nigerians as a pathway to job creation and poverty reduction by equipping them with entrepreneurial and employability skills.

According to him, one agency that has been at the forefront of this charge is the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

He said that apart from the graduation of more than 11,000 trainees, the agency in the last two years trained over 450,000 Nigerians and empowered them with start-up packs to start their own businesses.

Mr Joseph Ari, Director-General of the fund, said that trainees were trained in welding and fabrication, plumbing and pipe-fitting, tailoring, aluminium, tiling, Plaster of Paris (POP) installation as well as photography.

According to him, the fund monitoring and evaluation template indicates that where training occurs without the accompanying empowerment tools, the results become less impactful.

Ari said that bearing such in mind, ITF decided to empower all beneficiaries of its skills acquisition programmes with start-up kits.

“Surveys have revealed that in all cases where the trainees were provided with the kits, more than 90 percent earned reasonable livelihood as entrepreneurs. .

“It is our conviction that training the youth and women without equipping them, defeats the core objective of the programme and the policy of the present administration to create wealth and grow the economy,’’ he said.

Ari said that fund had put in place some skills in order to fill the skills gaps identified by the ITF and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Survey.

He said the fund’s target for 2019 was to equip Nigerians with lifelong skills in the agriculture, construction, transport and services sectors that were identified by the survey to have great potential for job creation.

Sen. Sam Egwu, Chairman, Senate Committee on Industry, said that it was not enough to have start-up kits without fund to start the business.

Egwu said that most of the trainees were not in business because of the lack of funds.

He suggested that Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Bank of Industry should be able to give the trainees some loan or grants to put their skills to use.

“After training, some form of money should be given to the trainees to achieve their objective of the programme,’’ he said.

He called on the Federal Government to do more by involving the necessary agencies to give little assistance to the trainees because ITF had done its part.

Egwu said that the Senate was ready to support the programme by passing the necessary bills. (NAN)
